This is an outfit I threw together from three pieces from American Apparel: Printed Cotton Spandex Jersey High-Waist Skirt ($34.00), Multi-Layered Reversible Petticoat ($70.00), and The Sash ($16.00).

American Apparel has many garments that can be worn in several different ways. For example, I wore the black and white polka dot skirt as a dress and added the petticoat on the bottom to add length and volume. The skirt can also be worn as your usual skirt with the top part folded in half. The Sash can also be worn in various belt styles as well as a cute bow tie around a collar of a long dress shirt (think Sailor Moon) or to accessorize a hat or bag. You can even use The Sash as a headband!

My favorite of these pieces is the multi-layered reversible petticoat. This petticoat can be worn alone or under a dress or skirt. They come in black, white, and Ballet pink. You can wear the petticoat with 2 layers or reverse it to have it 3 layers. If you wear this by itself, I recommend wearing short shorts or bloomers underneath since it can be a bit short.

I love buying these types of clothing that can transform other things in my wardrobe, so for these versatile items I don’t mind spending a bit more on them. However, if you live near an American Apparel outlet store, they have several items that you can still find in regular stores (or online) for much cheaper. For example, I got more sashes for only $4.20 each, a white petticoat for $24.50 (and this is still listed as a “new” item on their online store!), and another high-waist skirt for $12.00 this past weekend during their Fourth of July sale! What a deal!
