I wrote about MAC Chromagraphic Pencils in a previous post when the MAC Pret-A-Papier collection came out with two of these pencils (in neutral shades “NC15/NW20″ and “NW25/NC30″) that I love using as precision concealers, among many other things (see my Pret-A-Papier post to read about more uses).
MAC Pro sells more of these pencils in a wide variety of colors as part of their permanent line. In addition to the neutral colors I’ve mentioned above, they have one in “NC42/NW35″ for darker skin tones as well as colorful shades, like these blue pencils I purchased and swatched below:

These pencils are multi-use — great for lining, outlining, and defining your makeup designs. They are soft and creamy, making them really easy to apply. Some shades may not be safe on certain areas (like anywhere on the lip area, eye area, and/or waterline). Here’s a list of the colorful pencil shades with notes of where MAC has cautions on usage:
- Process Magenta — not on eye area and waterline
- Hi-Def Cyan — not on waterline
- Rich Purple — not on waterline
- Primary Yellow — not on waterline
- Marine Ultra — not on lip area and waterline
- Genuine Orange — not on eye area and waterline
- Basic Red — not on eye area and waterline
- Landscape Green — not on waterline
- Black Black — not on lip area
- Pure White — not on lip area
I came up with this very blue EOTD (Eye of the Day) using these blue chromagraphic pencils:

- Apply a primer on entire lid. I used MAC Paint Pot in “Soft Ochre”.
- Apply a light blue eyeshadow on inner corner, like MAC Pro E/S in “Sky Blue”.
- Use a dark blue eyeshadow on outer V and blend along entire crease. Instead of an eyeshadow, I used MAC Pro Pigment in “Naval Blue” (dry).
- Place a bright blue eyeshadow (like MAC E/S in “Electric Eel”) where the dark blue and light blue eyeshadows meet to create a gradient blending effect.
- Apply a white pencil to lower waterline, like MAC Eye Kohl in “Fascinating”.
- Line bottom lash line with MAC Pro Chromagraphic Pencil in “Hi-Def Cyan”.
- Smudge the same light blue eyeshadow used in Step 2 on top of Hi-Def Cyan with a pencil brush (or Q-tip).
- Curl your lashes and apply mascara to both your upper and lower lashes.
