Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel Bronzing Makeup Base

I’ve been wanting to try Chanel’s Soleil Tan de Chanel Bronzing Makeup Base (also known as Bronze Universel), but I kept putting off buying one since it’s pricey ($48.00). I went on a weekend mini-vacation, saw this at one of the stores I was at, and decided to finally splurge on it — and I’m so glad I did! I’ve been using this product everyday since I brought it home. :) I don’t think this is for everyone though, but if you find that it’s something that would work for you after reading this review, then I think it’s definitely worth the investment.

This light cream-gel bronzing formula has a velvety finish. For light to medium-light skin tones, Soleil Tan de Chanel Bronzing Makeup Base gives a perfect natural looking tan on its own. If you are medium skin toned, this bronzer base will end up blending in with your skin tone, so you most likely won’t be able to use it alone as a bronzer. It will still give you a sun-kissed glow either way, but the color isn’t enough to contour or make you look a bit tanned if you have medium or darker skin tone. As a result, those with medium to darker skin tones can use this product as it was intended — as a base under your favorite bronzer or (as Chanel’s website says) applied over or under your foundation for a hint of outdoor radiance. Alternatively, if you have difficulty keeping your regular bronzer on the whole day without fading, then this base is great for keeping your bronzer in place as well.

Since I have more of a light-medium skin tone, I was able to get this bronzer base to show up without putting a different bronzer product on top of it. I used Soleil Tan de Chanel Bronzing Makeup Base to contour my cheeks, to define my jaw line, and to add an overall tanned look by sweeping a brush in the shape of a “3” on the sides of my face (along hairline/temple, cheek contour, and back near ears to side of jaw). I had a new MAC 109 Small Contour Brush lying around, so I decided to try it with this product — it worked well (but it left a bunch of brush hairs in the container). I suggest using a dense brush that you can either swirl or pat down into the product, and then holding the brush towards the end of the handle as you lightly buff and blend it out on your face.

So if you want to make your cheeks more glowy, if you think you can use this to achieve a natural looking tan, or if you need something to help your regular bronzer last longer, then I highly recommend buying this! You can also try asking for a sample at your nearby Chanel makeup counter first, so that you can try it out before splurging on it. :) Keep in mind that the actual container is way bigger than the tester that’s normally displayed at the counter!

I’ve been wanting to try that, is it shimmer or matte?

Hi Lily! It’s actually somewhere in between — not too matte and not too shimmery. If I look up close I can see very fine, subtle shimmer, but once I apply it on my face I only really see a slight sheen — giving me a glowy look. :)

Hi, What do you use to apply it?

Brush? Makeup pad? Fingers?

Hi Claire,

I mentioned it above — “I had a new MAC 109 Small Contour Brush lying around, so I decided to try it with this product — it worked well (but it left a bunch of brush hairs in the container). I suggest using a dense brush that you can either swirl or pat down into the product, and then holding the brush towards the end of the handle as you lightly buff and blend it out on your face.” :)

Hellooo
I got a simple question
Do u think it can work as a contour alone?
I mean the only product I will use to contour
I’m light medium skin tone

Hi Divapunk,

If you have similar skin tone as me, then it works great for contouring! That’s actually what I use it for — to contour my cheeks and jaw line. The other product I like to use for contouring is a bronzing powder (Benefit “Hoola”). When I use this Chanel product, I like to set it with some translucent or colorless powder. Hope that helps! :)

just wondering, does it only come in one shade?

WyceeSeptember 27th, 2011 at 11:24 pm

Hi Lily,

Yes, this one only comes in one shade (at least as of today). On Chanel’s website, it says “Shade 30″, and there is only one shade listed.
