Make Up For Ever Aqua Smoky Lash Mascara

After happily going through two tubes of Maybelline The Falsies Volum’Express Mascara (see my review), I decided to try out Make Up For Ever Aqua Smoky Lash Mascara to see how it compares. Aqua Smoky Lash is just the waterproof version of MUFE’s Smoky Lash. I tend to stick with waterproof formulas, because it really helps hold a curl on my stubbornly straight lashes. :) This mascara claims to provide volume, length, and instant curl to the lashes and will not run under the most extreme conditions. Here’s what I experienced after using Aqua Smoky Lash for almost a month now!

Regardless of what mascara I use, I always have to use a curler to get my eyelashes to curl — this mascara is no different, so the “instant curl” didn’t happen for me (as I expected so I was not disappointed). It did a good job lengthening my lashes though. The Extra Black color is so dark and pigmented that it makes my lashes stand out and helps them look longer. With the same number of coats I use with Maybelline’s Falsies mascara (2 coats on top; 1 coat on bottom), I don’t get as much volume with Smoky Lash but it does give a more natural look. You can build up more volume with more coats, but you’ll risk getting clumps/flakes since you need to apply the coats quickly without letting your lashes dry in the process. This mascara definitely does not budge though. Like Falsies, it stays in place the whole day… but like Falsies, it takes more effort to remove your makeup at the end of the day (I use a Q-tip and Lancome Bi-Facil Double Action Eye Makeup Remover along my lashes).

Click on the picture above to take a closer look at how my lashes look with and without Aqua Smoky Lash. Without mascara, I naturally have a good amount of lashes that are somewhat long, but it’s hard to see that because they are so straight and point downward. Aqua Smoky Lash keeps my lashes curled the whole day, and it definitely helps lengthen them. I bought Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Smoky Lash at Sephora for $22.00, so it’s more than twice as much as Maybelline’s Falsies which run around $7-8 at drugstores and often go on sale for around $5. If you feel like splurging, then give it a go since it is a good quality mascara (and get the Aqua Smoky Lash Kit online since it’s the same price, same size, but comes with a 0.84oz travel-size bottle of MUFE’s Sens’Eyes Waterproof Sensitive Eye Cleanser!) — otherwise, stick to Maybelline Falsies to get more bang for your buck! :)
