White, Gold, and Purple EOTD

Reader Maria sent me a request for an eye makeup look that she can wear with her formal eggplant purple dress for an Air Force ball. Since she mentioned that she prefers eye shadow that isn’t too smokey, I came up with this look that uses neutral colors with a little pop of purple to tie in the color of her dress. I wanted to keep the overall look light but still dramatic for a nighttime look, so I kept the darker colors on the outer V to add some dimension. I used gold eye shadow for the center lid and swept it along the entire lash line, since gold really stands out with purple. Here’s how to do this Eye of the Day!

  1. Prime your eye area with a colorless primer or one that is a color that’s similar to your skin tone. This will help keep your eye shadow stay put as you dance the night away! The one I’m using here is Too Faced Shadow Insurance.
  2. For your highlight, use a matte cream color like Inglot E/S Matte in “351″ (see my eye makeup map if you’re not yet familiar with these terms).
  3. Using a dense eye shadow brush, pack on a shimmery white color on the center lid to inner corner, just below your crease. Also apply this color on your tear duct. I used Inglot E/S AMC Shine in “35″.
  4. Now flip to the other side of the same dense eye shadow brush. Pick up some shimmery gold eye shadow, and apply it on the center lid, blending where it meets the shimmery white color. Also apply this gold eye shadow on your entire lower lash line. The one I’m using is Inglot E/S AMC Shine in “27″.
  5. Place a pop of a matte eggplant purple color (like Make Up For Ever E/S in “92”) on the outer forth of your lid, just inside the outer V. Blend where it meets the gold by lightly patting some gold eye shadow where it meets the purple.
  6. Apply a dark brown color on the outer V, and blend it lightly along your crease so that it fades. I used Inglot AMC E/S in “52″.
  7. Line your upper lash line with a black liquid or gel liner. Here I used my matte black Inglot AMC Eyeliner Gel in “77” for the first time. You can also add a wing like I did here — click here for more details on the winged/cat eyeliner technique.
  8. Curl your lashes and apply mascara to both your upper and lower lashes. I used Make Up For Ever Aqua Smoky Lash Waterproof Extra Black Mascara (two coats on top lashes) and Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara in “01 Black” (one coat on bottom lashes).

Have fun at the ball, Maria! :)

i love your contacts! what brand and color are they?

WyceeDecember 11th, 2011 at 10:47 pm

Thanks Jae! These are prescription, so I order them from my optometrist. Unfortunately this brand has been discontinued, but the color is called Sapphire Blue in case you can find something similar. :)

I stumbled upon your site and wore this today. It was such a success! Several people complimented me on it and told me my eyes were beautiful–which is strange to me because they are just light brown. Thank you for your inspiration! :)

Hi Miranda! Thanks for letting me know! I love reading comments like yours :) Send me a picture if you’d like to be featured in the next fan makeup look!

Thanks Jae! My contacts are prescription, so I order them from my optometrist. Unfortunately the manufacturer has discontinued the colored version of my lenses earlier this year. The color is called Sapphire Blue though in case you find something similar. :)

I saw this picture and fell in love with it. I’m getting married next year and these are my color, well purple and yellow. I would like to know what type of make up did you use and where can i buy it at. Thank you soo much.

WyceeApril 6th, 2012 at 12:32 am

Hi Crystal,

I listed the products I used in each step above. They are mostly Inglot eye shadows that you can order online — here’s the link to the USA online store (there are separate links for other countries depending on where you live — just go to their main site, click on the “Shop Online” tab on the upper right, and the countries with online stores will be displayed). Here’s the link to their store locations — they have a few in the US, but I actually bought my eye shadows while vacationing in London. The purple eye shadow is by Make Up For Ever — this can be purchased at Sephora or online, like Amazon.com.

Could you maybe explain how to do the purple part? I keep trying but I can’t get it to look blended in like that…what type of brush do you use?
